About the Author

Sissy Carpey, an award-winning writer, has published articles in The Philadelphia Inquirer and its Sunday magazine, The Washington Post, The Jewish Reconstructionist, Philadelphia Jewish Exponent, Inside Magazine, Hadassah Magazine, and The Hadassah Jewish Parenting Book. In June, 2007, at the Philadelphia Writers Conference, she won the award for nonfiction writing for the first chapter of this book.

She lives and writes in suburban Philadelphia and is a 1968 graduate of Temple University, School of Communications, Philadelphia, where she was a pioneer among women returning to college.

She has written often about the Soviet Jewry movement, and, as part of her research for her book, she visited the Ukraine, where she walked the walk of her parents and grandparents.
